Dr Naa Adorkor Aryeetey of the Radiotherapy Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has revealed that early sex is a cause of cervical cancer in women.
According to Dr Aryeetey, women who are exposed to sex as early as 13 years, have a tendency of contracting cervical cancer.
About 90 per cent of cervical cancers were caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) that also caused genital warts. She emphasized that,
“Women who also have multiple sexual partners are at a high risk of contracting the disease.”
She said there’s an area in the vagina which must be fully developed before females can have sexual intercourse and that area develops after 13 years. She therefore recommended that women could begin having sex after 18 years.
She explained that failure to keep the vagina clean was a factor that contributed to 10 per cent of the risk of HPVs, and advised females to keep their private parts hygienic by washing it regularly with water, adding that it was not safe to use high scented soaps in cleaning the vagina. She urged women who had multiple sexual partners to avoid the practice and also cautioned them to protect themselves when having sexual intercourse
