Blows Exchanged As Legon SRC Presidential Debate At Radio Univers Turns Bloody

Until last night, I didn’t know that students were that passionate about politics in our tertiary institutions.
The scene at Radio Univers, Legon campus on Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday was horror as followers of the two SRC presidential aspirants, Mikdad Mohammed and Davis Ohene Fobi, clashed.

I, Zionfelix was the producer on duty during the Radio Univers-Legon SRC Electoral Commission organised ‘Presidential Debate ’15’ and this was what happened according to what my eyes saw and ears heard on the night of the event.

The Presidential Debate ’15 which started at 9 pm looked at issues on:

1. Lasting solutions to the deteriorating supply of power on the University of Ghana campus

2. The University of Ghana Strategic Plan, The five year SRC strategic policy and how their vision fits into this laid down strategies.

3. The stance of the SRC on the implementation of the Meal Plan under their watch.

4. Possible hike in fees of students and payment arrangements.

5. New directive for permit from VC before organizing outdoor events.

6. SRC’s external relations/ foreign policies.

7. UG Sports

8. Partisan infiltration in student activism.

9. Entertainment: policies for brokering and nurturing talented students of the University of Ghana.
Before God and man, you could see that the old boy of Prempeh Collage and resident of Commonwealth Hall, Mikdad Mohammed was on top of issues two hours into the show than his fellow, Davis Ohene Fobi, an old boy of Osei Tutu Senior High School.

The last agenda on the bill for the two presidential aspirants was to talk about their plans to solve the power rationing system at the university. Before the night of the debate, messages had gone viral that whilst Mikdad Mohammed together with two other students had petitioned the Legon branch of ECG to soften the ‘Dumsor’ on campus, Davis Ohene Fobi days  later had sent a letter to the National Head office of ECG  to do same.

This petition by Fobi is said to have triggered a problem for the Boss at the Legon branch of ECG due to his partiality to favour Legon main campus during the power rationing in the country.

Again on ‘DUMSOR’ that caused the whole commotion last night, Mikdad Mohammed is alleged to be a member of Concern Students of Legon, a pressure group who plan on demonstrating against the ‘dumsor’ problem on campus.

Mikdad Mohammed denied his membership to the pressure group when the host of the show questioned him but Davis Ohene Fobi said otherwise about his competitor. Upon several denials by Mikdad about his membership to the pressure group, Davis Ohene Fobi took his phone out to show messages his competitor had sent across endorsing the demonstration by the Concern Students of Legon.

Mikdad requested for Fobi’s phone to read the message he was talking about. After taking Fobi’s phone, all I heard from Fobi was ‘He has deleted my message’. Fobi alleged that Mikdad had deleted the message he was using as a proof against him that he, Mikdad Mohammed is part of the pressure group that has planned to demonstrate against ‘Dumsor’ on campus. I cannot confirm nor deny the allegation made by Fobi against Mikdad but going by the looks on Mikdad’s face after the allegation; it could be true (that doesn’t mean it is true).

After Fobi screamed that Mikdad had deleted his message live on air, his followers heard and started verbal argument outside the studio of Radio Univers. Fobi who still wanted to prove that Mikdad sent messages across to endorse the demonstration went out of the studio to request for a phone from his followers. He again told them Mikdad had deleted the message. This heated up the verbal argument which was happening outside the studio.

According to Abrantepa, the executive producer of the show who was outside with the followers of both aspirants, one of the guys called students of Commonwealth hall to come to the station. After the arrival of the Commonwealth boys at the radio station, followers of both SRC presidential aspirants started exchanging blows.

In the studio with Mikdad and Fobi, comments by both parties were very bad that I cannot state some. The show had to close 15 minutes before midnight by the order of programme’s manager, Dr. Carl only for the chaos to continue.

Mikdad was begged to talk to his Commonwealth followers 30 minutes after the sad event started but that did not cool them down. Some followed him on his way out but majority were still at the radio station waiting for Fobi to come out of the studio. Security personnel were called to come handle the issue but the ‘war’ was not an easy task for them.

Fobi was camped in the studio till 2 am when about 5 security men escorted him to his hall. According to a report by the security man on duty, Commonwealth boys were on their way from Fobi’s hall of residence when they were taking him there so they had to take a U-Turn to Legon hall.

Opanka turns Gospel artiste...

A new breeze will blow
into the gospel music
industry as the industry
witnesses the dynamic
turnover of a rap addict
to a rhythmic flow of
spoken word to praise
his Maker for saving him
as he had an encounter
with death early this
year.
“Abubro Nkosua” which is the title of the
song is the first single Opanka will release
out of his hot singles to hit the airwaves this
year, paving way for his debut album
“Akwaaba.” The gospel song featuring gospel
gem and songstress Gifty Osei will be
released on 6th February 2015.
Dadie Opanka, the microphone abuser early
this year had a brisk encounter with death
which influenced the song.
“Death is real, I already knew it but
the reality of death hit me with a big
blow after this encounter and I know
God is real and you need to
surrender to Him no matter who you
are, and in everything God first. As
God has given me another chance to
live, I feel like if I don’t tell people
how wonderful He is, then I’m not
being grateful,” he said.
The song which is not the usual hiplife
gospel tune but a real gospel tune, sees the
artist portraying his versatility as a creative
person. He is heard doing a deep touch of
spoken word on the tune and taking people
through everything that happened and how
God saved him, whilst Gifty Osei follows with
a soothing hook. The song can leave you in
tears after listening to it.
Both gospel and rap lovers should watch out
for the song which will take the gospel and
hiplife industry by storm. The single will be
released on 6 February 2015.

E.C.G: 24 hours out 12 hours in

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has now started implementing a 24- hour power rationing plan.
Under the new schedule, customers are expected to experience 24-hours power outage (lights off) popularly called dumsor in the local parlance, and have power restored for the next 12 hours.

It is the first time in the country’s history that the people have to experience light off for as long a period as 24 hours and also the longest period of load shedding – since May 2012 to date.

President John Mahama had pledged ahead of the 2012 elections that his administration would resolve the dumsor problem by 2013, but three years down the lane, the power crisis is still with the country, collapsing industries and small scale businesses.

“The power crisis will be a thing of the past by the end of 2013,” Mr. Mahama said at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Presidential debate prior to the 2012 general elections.
Some of the effects of the power crisis includes Ghanaians having to battle with increased cases of night marauders (armed robbers) and school children having difficulties in doing their home work.

Students are running to where they can get electricity to study and do their assignments, risking being attacked by miscreants.

No Timetable
The situation is so unpredictable that Public Relations Manager for ECG, William Boating, says Ghanaians should not expect a regular time table for the load shedding since it could not be followed holistically due to shortfalls.

Mr. Boating, who spoke on Accra-based Oman FM last week, said a quantum of generation was needed for the drawing of a time table for the country.

“As it is now, the deficit is so high that there is no specific quantum to draw the time table for the entire country,” Mr Boateng indicated.
Upcoming Demo

Meanwhile, a group of Ghanaians who go under the name ‘Concerned Ghanaians,’ are planning to stage a massive demonstration on Independence Day, Friday, March 6, 2015 against the erratic electricity supply.

The intended demonstration, which is set to take place in the capital city, Accra, has already started gaining momentum with dumsor-branded T-shirts already out. Some have started placing orders for the T-shirts which have ‘dumsor’ boldly inscribed in front.

Organizers of the demonstration have therefore urged all Ghanaians to forget their political colours and join in the march since the energy crisis affects members of both the governing and the opposition parties.

“Sitting on the fence is not an option, join the march. Let us show that we love our country. Let us show that we care,” the group posted on the Facebook page whiles urging all patriotic citizens to stand up and be counted.
Meanwhile, pressure group, OccupyGhana has thrown its weight behind the Concerned Ghanaians. Other pressure groups are said to have also expressed interest in joining the demonstration, urging all Ghanaians to help save the country.

Medical student jumps from two-storey to escape from rapist

A final year female medical student at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has sustained severe injuries after attempting to escape rape.

The victim, who is yet to be identified, is said to have jumped from the window of her second floor hostel after the suspected rapist barged in on her.

According to a Joy FM report Friday, the victim landed on her feet in her attempt to escape from the alleged rapist and ended up sustaining injuries at her waist.

The police at Korle Bu who confirmed the incident said the suspect has been arrested pending further investigations.

Excited woman falls to death after boyfriend's proposal.

A holidaymaker died in Ibiza after falling over a cliff as she celebrated a marriage proposal from her boyfriend.

Police say she lost her balance as she jumped up and down in excitement after her partner asked for her hand in marriage.

The pair, from Bulgaria, were at a beauty spot famed for its sunset views.

Dimitrina Dimitrova, 29, suffered a heart attack brought on by injuries caused by the 65ft fall in the tiny resort of Cala Tarida on Ibiza's west coast.

She was alive but unconscious when paramedics arrived but died at the scene minutes later.

The incident happened around lunchtime on Tuesday. A local Civil Guard spokesman said: 'Everything is pointing towards the death being the result of a tragic freak accident.'

A source added: 'Her boyfriend lived and worked on Ibiza. She had arrived two days earlier to visit him and look for work.

'She fell seconds after her partner surprised her by proposing to her as she jumped up and down with emotion.'

It is believed the dead woman's devastated waiter boyfriend had singled out the beauty spot to make his marriage proposal.

Last August a Polish couple fell to their deaths while taking a selfie at a cliff's edge in the popular tourist spot Cabo da Roca, Portugal.

Their children, aged five and six, witnessed the accident and were taken into care before returning to their homeland to live with relatives.

Kids' throat cut by Mother

A woman accused of trying to kill her three small children has told detectives she cut their throats with a kitchen knife to keep them quiet for her soldier husband.

Christina Booth, 29, of Olympia, Washington, said in the police interview that her husband never helped her with the six-month-old twins and the two year old and got “very annoyed” when they cried, according to court papers.

She was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder bail was set at three million dollars. The Thurston County prosecutor’s office said she had not yet been formally charged.

The children were said to be in a stable condition after undergoing surgery and have been placed in the custody of the state’s child protective services.

The court papers said Booth’s husband Thomas told police his wife was being treated for post-natal depression.

Chinese mother sells new born for $7000

A woman in central China has been prosecuted for selling her new-born baby for $7,000, state media reports said, the latest of a string of shocking cases that have shed light on the country's trade in children.

The 30-year-old woman, surnamed Huang, allegedly colluded with an obstetrician, Yang, in Xinxiang county, Henan province, to sell the baby boy, according to details published in the Procuratorial Daily, a legal publication.

Yang sold the baby boy to a couple in the same county for 42,000 yuan. She gave 35,000 yuan to Huang and kept 7,000 yuan for herself, the report said.

The case came to light in August after the boy's grandmother alerted police.

The grandmother said Huang had left the village to go to her parents' home after quarreling with her husband.

When Huang returned two weeks later, she said the baby had died but the grandmother grew suspicious as her daughter-in-law didn't seem sad. A relative then discovered that the boy had been sold.

Huang had a son from a previous marriage and thought a new baby would be bad for the elder child, reports said.

The boy is now in the care of his father's family.

Child trafficking is a long-standing problem in China. A traditional preference for sons and the country's one-child policy means that boys are particularly prized.

Earlier this month, a Chinese man who was abducted from a vegetable market as a toddler enjoyed an emotional reunion with his father after 24 years apart.

The news came the same week police said they had busted a trafficking ring involving at least 103 people, and rescued 37 newborn babies that were transported in handbags and suitcases to prospective buyers.

According to the U.S. State Department's 2014 Trafficking in Persons Report, China does not fully comply with the recommended minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, the report says it is making significant efforts to do.

Power crisis wahala- we're not being told the truth!

POWER CRISIS: WE ARE NOT BEING TOLD THE TRUTH - EXPERT

The Director of Operations of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy, Mr Benjamin Boakye, has bemoaned the deterioration in the power crisis currently facing the country.

Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM Monday, Mr Boakye said the power authorities were not telling Ghanaians the truth about the crisis, adding: 'The stories keep changing.'

He questioned why Ghana could not produce the 1900 Megawatts of electricity, which he said was needed to power the country.

According to him, even if Ghana could not secure gas from Nigeria to power the plants, crude oil ought to be bought to power them.

Mr Boakye added that the frequency at which power plants were serviced was also suspicious.

'Every week, every month, we are told they've [the plants] gone for servicing. That cannot be the case,' he said.

He therefore called for a technical audit of the entire power sector to ascertain what the problem really was

Deadly ECG pole at Adenta

This Is Dangerous: Broken Electric Pole May Cause A Disater In Adenta

OMGGhana.com gathers that an electric pole situated in the Adentan municipality has been in a poor state for almost one month and the authorities in charge seem not to care about it.

This is a clear indication of the lackadaisical attitude of the Electricity Company of Ghana in doing their work. This might lead to a disaster if authorities do not take appropriate action since the near broken pole, might fall and cause an accident.

OMGGhana.com therefore calls on the authorities to act immediately to ensure the safety of the residents.

Heavy rain storm destroys University of Ghana students' market

A heavy rain storm that hit parts of Accra on Saturday evening, has collapsed the University of Ghana students’ market popularly known as ‘night market’.

According to eye witnesses, the roofing members of the makeshift structure that served as stalls for food vendors were stomped out of the ground and dislocated.

A female vendor who was taking refuge under the shed at the time of the storm was reportedly hit by one of the flying roofing sheets and sustained serious injuries. Information however indicates that she is currently receiving emergency treatment at the University hospital.

The night market which serves as a food vending and general provisions point for the tens of thousands of university students and staff has seen no rehabilitation since its construction some five years ago.

Facebook now free on Airtel Ghana

This is as a result of Airtel’s Partnership with Facebook as part of the social network’s Internet.org programme.

Airtel has already begun running adverts telling that public that they can surf Facebook on the network for free.

The Founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, announced the partnership on his Facebook page Friday.

Zuckerberg said: “Today we're launching Internet.org in Ghana -- giving people on the Airtel network access to free basic internet services for education, health, jobs and communication.

“Right now only about 12% of people in Ghana are connected to the internet, but connectivity is already improving people's lives and communities.

“By connecting everyone, we hope to unlock even more opportunities for Ghana…”

Zuckerberg said Ghana was the fifth country that had connected through Internet.org -- after Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and Colombia.

Thieves with magic hit Accra

The Director General of the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Reverend David Nenyi Ampah-Bennin, has advised the general public to appreciate what they had and not be greedy as there were tricksters around taking advantage of people who want to cut  corners BY DIGISAVER" HREF="#">TO MAKE QUICK MONEY.

The DCOP spoke to The Mirror in relation to smart  or ‘magic’ thieves who rely on their brains and brawn to steal from their victims because all they (thieves) need is attention for victims to willingly hand over their valued assets.

In  some cases, unsuspecting victims had gone to the extent of borrowing  items or money they did not have, to give to the thieves who are said to be operating by means of hypnosis.

Hypnosis
Hypnosis is an induced sleep-like state in which a person is deeply relaxed but  the mind responds easily to external suggestions. Hypnotised subjects are said to show an increased response to suggestions.

Process
Narrating her ordeal, a young lady who gave her name as Nana Ama, said she was approached in Accra Central by two young men who asked for directions to a popular bank around the Makola shopping mall.

Unaware of their agenda, she directed them to the bank but just as she was turning around to go away, one of the gentlemen informed her he had pure BY DIGISAVER" HREF="#">GOLD in his possession and asked if she was interested.

“I don’t sell BY DIGISAVER" HREF="#">GOLD or deal in gold but for some strange reasons, I  told him I wanted to have a look at it so we moved to a less busy area around the shopping mall. Then he asked if I had GH¢1,000 on me,” she narrated.

Nana Ama said without any hesitation, she quickly pulled out  her purse and handed over GH¢ 300 to the gentleman as that was the only amount she had on her at the time.

The gentleman then handed her a white handkerchief and instructed her to hide it since it could be easily snatched by thieves.

It was after the men had left that she regained consciousness and realised she had been duped as the handkerchief contained an old washed-out necklace.

Another victim
A mobile phone recharge card seller at Adabraka also told The Mirror that she was in her shop when a young lady she knew came to buy recharge cards.

She said the lady who was speaking to someone on the phone requested for GH¢ 60 worth of the cards which she gave her.

She said the lady then scratched the cards and called out the digits to the person on the other side of the line.

She said she got worried when the lady asked for more cards and kept talking to the person on phone.

“This lady kept sending the phone credit to the guy he was talking to but because I know her, I didn’t say anything. It was when the amount reached GH¢400 that I told her to pay before asking for more.

“I overheard the man she was talking to tell her he would send the money through mobile money. That was when I realised she had been duped.   So I held her and demanded my money.  Just when the guy hang up, it looked like she had just woken up from sleep, she had no money on her.

“She then told me she received a message telling her she had won some money and that she needed to send some credit  so her prize  money could be sent to her,” she continued.

The card seller said she followed the lady home and collected the GH¢400 from her parents.

Police advice
DCOP Ampah-Bennin said the police had received several reports from victims on loss of property and money to strangers.

“The commonest of their tricks is to tell you they have BY DIGISAVER" HREF="#">GOLD or diamond and then lure you into giving them money or an item to the value of the gold,” he said.

He cautioned the general public,  especially females, to be careful of how they interact with strangers, saying “if you meet a stranger and he or she asks  for directions, do not follow the person.

“Just point to the general direction and move away. If you are not lucky, you could also be harmed or sexually abused in addition to being duped,” he stressed.

Hilife musician Bisa Kdei
has confirmed that he
called Shatta Wale a
comedian days ago in a
radio interview but did
not mean any harm with
his description of the
dancehall artiste.
Bisa in an interview on eTV said he
described Shatta Wale as such looking at
how he makes people fall in love with his
songs.
He admitted that the reigning artiste of the

collaborating with him soon.
“I believe my brother Shatta is doing
a great job in the dancehall scene
and indeed he has raised the bar to
a certain level but all the same I
would love to do a collaboration with
him when the time comes. He acts
as if he is a rude guy but to me he
is not.”
Shatta Wale on the same show days ago
commenting on Bisa’s comment said he has
no problem with the opinion by the ‘Odo

attributed with such title is not a big deal.

My clitoris is gone forever!

Miss Kuurimah Umuhera Ibrahim is a former Integrated Development Studies student of University Development Studies who has released her latest song titled Why, a collaborative musical work with Noella Wiyaala that speaks against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) which has been in existence for years.

In an exclusive interview with Flex newspaper, she said: “The motive behind the Female Genital Mutilation, according to our elders is that, they want to prevent a lady from jumping from one man to the other to preserve her virginity till she gets married. They think the clitoris is a dirt, so when they cut it, it becomes clean. They say it’s a religion but I don’t agree with them because no religion will make women suffer. Also they talk about culture but I believe it’s not culture but rather torture.”

Kuurimah further recounted how as a young girl she went through the ordeal of female circumcision: “I was a week young when my clitoris was cut and I am now twenty five years old. My clitoris is gone forever is I speak to you. I never knew there was something like that so I lived life like any other lady but after I realized what they had taken from me, something that I can never get back, there has been sadness in me always that is why I have taken it upon myself to fight it because if we all keep mute, it will never stop. I don’t want any young girl to go through this pain.”

She stated emphatically that she has gone through a lot but she doesn’t care if she dies out of her resolve to create awareness to weed out Female Genital Mutilation from our society.

“People threaten me, attack me physically. Recently, petrol was poured on me and I was nearly burnt to death but I don’t care if I die through this. I want to fight for others so I am not scared with my decision. Besides, I am not alone but with God.

She projected that in five years, this project must have yielded positive results and also suggested that those who cut girl’s clitoris in the guise of culture should be arrested.

Ghanaians may not enjoy the African cup-GRIDCo

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has threatened to reduce power supply to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) from 600 megawatts to 300 megawatts.
The Public Relations Officer of ECG, William Boateng revealed this in an interview on Citi FM on Monday afternoon. He indicated that the managements of ECG and GRIDCo are yet to meet to discuss the reasons for the deficit and to decide on the next course of action for the country in relation to the ongoing load shedding.

This action would certainly be a huge blow to most Ghanaians who are football lovers since it means they’ll miss exciting moments of the ongoing African Cup.

EXPOSED: Sugar Mummy Agency operates in Nungua.

The youth of our nation are resorting to morally corrupt means of making a living and I ask myself, is this the only option?
My inquiries revealed that there are covert networking events periodically held in Accra and Kumasi which is aimed at bringing young ladies and gentlemen closer to their newly-acquired jobs (dating sugar mummies and daddies). This new way of living corrupts the social fabric that unites us as a nation and breeds laziness that would end up collapsing the economy.

A male partner ‘hooker’ agency which operates in Nungua is in the business of connecting young men with wealthy women. Sugar mummies who are interested in the services of young “strong men” for pleasure will have to pick and fill a form for ¢20 from the said agency. A staff of the agency would then link the applicant to an educated and strong young man.

A staff of the agency revealed in an interview with Starr Fm that the guys are readily available and are linked with the wealthy woman as soon as the applicant submits the form. He said,

“The guys are available and as soon as you are done with the processes you can have one today.”
The Agency has erected sign posts at various vantage points in Accra that carries all information about their operation.
